Tahiti casino won’t admit locals

Locals residents are banned from playing at the casino planned in French Polynesia, local press reported. The president Gaston Flosse says the casino that is to be part of the Mahana Beach Resort will only admit foreign guests of the resort. Flosse reiterated that French Polynesians won’t be allowed into the casino even if they book a room. The casino is being described as integral to the US$ 3 billion dollar resort project but strongly opposed by the pro-independence party and the churches.

Meanwhile in the pacific, attempts to have a referendum in the Northern Marianas to halt Best Sunshine casino project on Saipan have failed. Those opposed to the casino wanted a vote on the day of the general election in November but failed to get 20 percent of CNMI registered voters to sign up. The Lottery Commission awarded Best Sunshine International Limited a licence to develop and operate a US$ 2 billion casino, in detriment of a rival bid by Marianas Stars Entertainment.
