Star Entertainment launches Women in Gaming Australia

One of the directors of Australian casino operator The Star Entertainment Group is setting up a new company designed to help promote women to leadership roles in the casino and gaming industry, The Australian reports.

“This is one of the growth sectors of the Australian economy,” said Katie Lahey. “It is linked to what is happening in the Chinese tourism sector. If you want to get a foot in the door of a career, this is a great industry to get a foot in the door in.

“Tourism, hospitality and entertainment is one of the growth sectors of the Australian economy and we want to make sure that women think of it as a career option.”

Women in Gaming Australia is an initiative of The Star Entertainment Group, and gaming supplier Aristocrat Technologies. It will launch a range of initiatives to encourage and help develop the careers of women in the industry, including networking groups, mentoring forums and industry-wide educational and professional development opportunities.

The Star chief executive Matt Bekier said the aim was to encourage other gaming companies to become involved. He added that Star has set a target of having women in half the leadership roles by 2020.
