Punters to place bets online as soon as Oct

Singapore punters may be able to legally place bets online as early as October, the Straits Times reports.

According to the news outlet, Singapore-based lottery operators Singapore Pools and Singapore Turf Club (STC) have applied to be exempted from laws that block online betting, looking to launch their online betting service once the applications are approved.

It is understood that both lottery operators are conducting final tests of their online betting platforms, and are hoping to be exempted from the Remote Gambling Act by the end of this month.

However, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said it is only evaluating applications from Singapore Pools and STC.

While details are still being finalized, it appears that all lotteries and games, with the exception of Big Sweep will be available online.

It is also understood that operators will be able to take live bets online, said the news outlet.

The moves are said to combat the rise of illegal online operators who have flourished in the two years since Parliament passed the Remote Gambling Act, which outlawed online and phone gambling.
