“No deadline” for UnionPay restrictions

Following media reports that the Macau government was to crack down on the illegal use of UnionPay cards in casinos by July 1, Secretary for Economy and Finance, Francis Tam Pak Yuen, said that no deadline had been officially set for operators to restrict use of the devices used to swipe the cards in casinos. Tam reiterated that the government continues to monitor all activities related to UnionPay and other transactions used to circumvent money controls in China and would take the appropriate measures as required, though he pointed out that the use of portable devices was not illegal if authorized by UnionPay.
