MGM Resorts confident of casino in Osaka by 2019

MGM Resorts is still confident Japan’s parliament will pass a bill to legalise gambling by the Fall of this year, Reuters cited Ed Bowers, MGM’s senior vice president for global gaming development as saying in an interview. Bowers said such a timetable would allow operators to have a resort up and running in Osaka by 2019, in time for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. Lawmakers have expressed doubt recently that the bill will be passed by the end of the current session on June 22, as had been originally expected. Lawmaker Sakihito Ozawa, a key casino supporter, gave the bill a “50-50” chance of passing. MGM has shown officials a tentative plan for how it would develop the Yumeshima in Osaka, featuring two hotel towers with a total of 5,000 rooms, a 20,000 seat entertainment arena and a circular waterway inspired by the moat surrounding Osaka Castle, the report said.
