Macau in need of wake up call: SJM chairman

SJM Holdings chairman Dr, Ambrose So says Macau’s gaming market is in need of a “wake up-call.”

The SJM chief made the comments during his speech at the Lunar New Year’s Eve Gala Dinner held at the Grand Lisboa on January 27.

“What the market needs now is a wake-up call, and for this the Rooster arrives just in time. As everyone knows, the Rooster is the alarm clock of the animal world, and we anticipate that his loud voice will herald a period of renewed growth and prosperity for Macau,” he said.

Mr. So also confirmed the Grand Lisboa Palace has made “substantial progress” and is expecting the re-opening of the Jai Alai Hotel “early this year.”

The Gala Dinner was also attended by SJM managing director Ms. Angela Leong, who, in her speech, expressed optimism of Macau’s continued recovery.

“In the second half of 2016, the gaming revenue marked five months consecutive year-on-year growth, and some of the scholars considered the industry has been recovering,” said Leong.

The dinner was also attended by chief executive of Macau SAR Mr. Chui Sai On, Secretary General of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau SAR Mr. Wang Xindong, Deputy Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in Macau SAR Mr. Cai Sipin, and Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macau SAR Government Mr. Alexis Tam Chon Weng.
