Macau Government accepts partial smoking ban

The Health Bureau has reportedly accepted a proposal that smoking zones in casinos be scrapped and replaced with smoking rooms without slot machines or gaming tables. The new arrangements would allow VIP gaming rooms to still have smoking zones where gamblers could continue playing. Sterne Agee said in a note, that according to its contacts, the proposal is not yet a done deal and there is no timeframe. It said any changes are likely to take more than a year to implement, however the proposals as they currently stand are a “fairly benign” solution to what has been a “political hot potato” on the island. The 14 casinos that failed the first two rounds of air-quality tests are likely to be the first to transition.
