Indian eSports league to launch in May

India is launching a new eSports league named UCypher, a first of its kind tournament that will see 10 teams competing in PC, console and mobile games, local media reports.

Founded by Ronnie Screwvala, a media and entertainment entrepreneur, philanthropist and founder of UTV Group and USports, the eSports league is said to have nearly Rs 80 – 100 crore (US$11.7 million – $14.7 million) in funding.

“eSports fits very well in the DNA of USports. We want something out of the box, something disruptive, and something that creates an impact. First we got associated with Kabaddi (Pro Kabaddi League), and now we are going to launch eSports league,” Screwvala told ET.

Screwvala said esports development in India previously lagged behind other countries as there was not enough bandwidth for PC gaming. However, mobile has changed those dynamics and Indians are now increasingly getting involved in eSports.

UCypher is targeting a May launch.
