I.D. cards may be used to bar problem gamblers

Japan’s ruling parties will be looking into safeguards against problem gambling as part of recently passed casino legislation, Nikkei Asian Review reports.

The legislation which was enacted last week, has called for stronger measures to combat gambling addiction.

One proposed plan is to restrict entry of suspected gambling addicts based on their “My Number” identification cards, which are issued for social security and tax purposes.

However, to use the cards for this purpose, the ruling parties would need to amend the law authorizing the national IDs, as it currently falls outside the intended scope of the original legislation.

It is understood that junior coalition partner Komeito will set up a project team within the month to address these issues, as well as craft a public awareness campaign and rehabilitation centers.
