China lifts console ban, sparks surge in Nintendo stock

    China has lifted its longtime ban on video game consoles, sending shares in Japan’s Nintendo up as much as 11 percent at one point after the announcement on expectations it may open a huge new market. The State Council said in a statement that it will now allow consoles to be manufactured in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone. China banned the consoles in 2000 on concerns about the violent content of some of the games.
